krishir bhū-vācakah śabdo

naś ca nirvriti-vācakah

tayor aikyam param brahma

krishna ity abhidhīyate

SYNONYMS

krishih — the verbal root krish; bhū — attractive existence; vācakah — signifying; śabdah — word; nah — the syllable na; ca — and; nirvriti — spiritual pleasure; vācakah — indicating; tayoh — of both; aikyam — amalgamation; param — supreme; brahma — Absolute Truth; krishnah — Lord Krishna; iti — thus; abhidhīyate — is called.

TRANSLATION

"'The word "krish" is the attractive feature of the Lord's existence, and "na" means spiritual pleasure. When the verb "krish" is added to the affix "na," it becomes "Krishna," which indicates the Absolute Truth.'

PURPORT

This is a verse from the Mahābhārata (Udyoga-parva 71.4).
