bandhunam icchatam datum

krishnaya bhaginim nripa

tato nivarya krishna-dvid

rukmi caidyam amanyata

SYNONYMS

bandhunam -- her family members; icchatam -- even as they were desiring; datum -- to give; krishnaya -- to Krishna; bhaginim -- their sister; nripa -- O King; tatah -- from this; nivarya -- preventing them; krishna-dvit -- hateful of Krishna; rukmi -- Rukmi; caidyam -- Caidya (Sisupala); amanyata -- considered.

TRANSLATION

Because Rukmi envied the Lord, O King, he forbade his family members to give his sister to Krishna, although they wanted to. Instead, Rukmi decided to give Rukmini to Sisupala.

PURPORT

Rukmi abused his position as elder brother and acted with impure motives. He would only suffer for his decision.
