grihītvā kare krishnam

upālabhya hitaishinī

yaśodā bhaya-sambhrānta-

prekshanāksham abhāshata

SYNONYMS

— mother Yaśodā; grihītvā — taking; kare — within the hands (being anxious about what Krishna might have eaten); krishnamKrishna; upālabhya — wanted to chastise Him; hita-eshinī — because she was anxious for the welfare of Krishna, she became very much agitated, thinking, "How is it that Krishna has eaten earth?"; yaśodā — mother Yaśodā; bhaya-sambhrānta-prekshana-aksham — began to look very carefully within Krishna's mouth in fear, to see if Krishna had eaten something dangerous; abhāshata — began to address Krishna.

TRANSLATION

Upon hearing this from Krishna's playmates, mother Yaśodā, who was always full of anxiety over Krishna's welfare, picked Krishna up with her hands to look into His mouth and chastise Him. Her eyes fearful, she spoke to her son as follows.
