bhīshmo drono 'mbikā-putro

gāndhārī sa-sutā tathā

sa-dārāh pāndavāh kuntī

sañjayo vidurah kripah

kuntībhojo virātaś ca

bhīshmako nagnajin mahān

purujid drupadah śalyo

dhrishtaketuh sa kāśi-rāt

damaghosho viśālāksho

maithilo madra-kekayau

yudhāmanyuh suśarmā ca

sa-sutā bāhlikādayah

rājāno ye ca rājendra

yudhishthiram anuvratāh

śrī-niketam vapuh śaureh

sa-strīkam vīkshya vismitāh

SYNONYMS

bhīshmah dronah ambikā-putrah — Bhīsma, Drona and the son of Ambikā (Dhritarāshtra); gāndhārī — Gāndhārī; sa — together with; sutāh — her sons; tathā — also; sa-dārāh — with their wives; pāndavāh — the sons of Pāndu; kuntī — Kuntī; sañjayah vidurah kripah — Sañjaya, Vidura and Kripa; kuntībhojah virātah ca — Kuntībhoja and Virāta; bhīshmakah — Bhīsmaka; nagnajit — Nagnajit; mahān — the great; purujit drupadah śalyah — Purujit, Drupada and Śalya; dhrishtaketuh — Dhrishtaketu; sah — he; kāśi-rāt — the King of Kāsi; damaghoshah viśālākshah — Damaghosha and Viśālāksha; maithilah — the King of Mithilā; madra-kekayau — the kings of Madra and Kekaya; yudhāmanyuh suśarmā ca — Yudhāmanyu and Suśarmā; sa-sutāh — with their sons; bāhlika-ādayah — Bāhlika and others; rājānah — kings; ye — who; ca — and; rāja-indra — O best of kings (Parīkshit); yudhishthiram — Mahārāja Yudhishthira; anuvratāh — following; śrī — of opulence and beauty; niketam — the abode; vapuh — the personal form; śaureh — of Lord Krishna; sa-striīkam — along with His wives; vīkshya — seeing; vismitāh — amazed.

TRANSLATION

All the royalty present, including Bhīshma, Drona, Dhritarāshtra, Gāndhārī and her sons, the Pāndavas and their wives, Kuntī, Sañjaya, Vidura, Kripācārya, Kuntībhoja, Virāta, Bhīshmaka, the great Nagnajit, Purujit, Drupada, Śalya, Dhrishtaketu, Kāśirāja, Damaghosha, Viśālāksha, Maithila, Madra, Kekaya, Yudhāmanyu, Suśarmā, Bāhlika with his associates and their sons, and the many other kings subservient to Mahārāja Yudhishthira — all of them, O best of kings, were simply amazed to see the transcendental form of Lord Krishna, the abode of all opulence and beauty, standing before them with His consorts.

PURPORT

All these kings were now followers of Yudhishthira because he had subjugated each of them to earn the privilege of performing the Rājasūya sacrifice. The Vedic injunctions state that a kshatriya who wants to execute the Rājasūya for elevation to heaven must first send out a "victory horse" to roam freely; any other king whose territory this horse enters must either voluntarily submit or face the kshatriya or his representatives in battle.
