svan svan bandhun parishvajya

lakshmaneshubhir arditan

ruruduh susvaram dina

ghnantya atmanam atmana

SYNONYMS

svan svan -- their own respective husbands; bandhun -- friends; parishvajya -- embracing; lakshmana-ishubhih -- by the arrows of Lakshmana; arditan -- who were killed; ruruduh -- all the wives cried piteously; su-svaram -- it was very sweet to hear; dinah -- very poor; ghnantyah -- striking; atmanam -- their breasts; atmana -- by themselves.

TRANSLATION

Striking their breasts in affliction because their husbands had been killed by the arrows of Lakshmana, the women embraced their respective husbands and cried piteously in voices appealing to everyone.
