mahishmatyam sanniruddho

mukto yena kapir yatha

SYNONYMS

grihitah -- was arrested by force; lilaya -- very easily; strinam -- of the women; samaksham -- in the presence; krita-kilbishah -- thus becoming an offender; mahishmatyam -- in the city known as Mahishmati; sanniruddhah -- was arrested; muktah -- released; yena -- by whom (Kartaviryarjuna); kapih yatha -- exactly as done to a monkey.

TRANSLATION

When Ravana attempted to insult Kartaviryarjuna in the presence of the women and thus offended him, Kartaviryarjuna easily arrested Ravana and put him in custody in the city of Mahishmati, just as one captures a monkey, and then released him neglectfully.
