śrī-śuka uvāca

amśumāmś ca tapas tepe

gańgānayana-kāmyayā

kālam mahāntam nāśaknot

tatah kālena samsthitah

SYNONYMS

śrī-śukah uvācaŚrī Śukadeva Gosvāmī said; amśumān — the king named Amśumān; ca — also; tapah tepe — executed austerity; gańgā — the Ganges; ānayana-kāmyayā — with a desire to bring the Ganges to this material world to deliver his forefathers; kālam — time; mahāntam — for a long duration; na — not; aśaknot — was successful; tatah — thereafter; kālenain due course of time; samsthitah — died.

TRANSLATION

Śukadeva Gosvāmī continued: King Amśumān, like his grandfather, performed austerities for a very long time. Nonetheless, he could not bring the Ganges to this material world, and thereafter, in due course of time, he died.
