SYNONYMS
kshudhā-ārtah — being aggrieved by hunger; jagrihe — caught; vipram — the brāhmana; tat-patnī — his wife; āha — said; akrita-artha-vat — being unsatisfied, poor and hungry; na — not; bhavān — yourself; rākshasah — a man-eater; sākshāt — directly or factually; ikshvākūnām — among the descendants of Mahārāja Ikshvāku; mahā-rathah — a great fighter; madayantyāh — of Madayantī; patih — the husband; vīra — O hero; na — not; adharmam — irreligious act; kartum — to do; arhasi — you deserve; dehi — please deliver; me — my; apatya-kāmāyāh — desiring to get a son; akrita-artham — whose desire has not been fulfilled; patim — husband; dvijam — who is a brāhmana.
TRANSLATION
Being influenced by the propensity of a Rākshasa and being very hungry, King Saudāsa seized the brāhmana. Then the poor woman, the brāhmana's wife, said to the King: O hero, you are not actually a man-eater; rather, you are among the descendants of Mahārāja Ikshvāku. Indeed, you are a great fighter, the husband of Madayantī. You should not act irreligiously in this way. I desire to have a son. Please, therefore, return my husband, who has not yet impregnated me.
