namaḥ śivāya rudrāya

namaḥ śakti-dharāya ca

sarva-vidyādhipataye

bhūtānāḿ pataye namaḥ

SYNONYMS

namaḥI offer my respectful obeisances unto You; śivāya — the incarnation named Lord Śiva; rudrāya — the expansion named Rudra; namaḥ — obeisances; śakti-dharāya — the reservoir of all potencies; ca — and; sarva-vidyā-adhipataye — the reservoir of all knowledge; bhūtānām — of the living entities; pataye — the supreme master; namaḥI offer my respectful obeisances unto You.

TRANSLATION

I offer my respectful obeisances unto You, Lord Śiva, or Rudra, who are the reservoir of all potencies, the reservoir of all knowledge, and the master of everyone.

PURPORT

It is the system for one to offer obeisances unto the expansion or incarnation of the Lord. Lord Śiva is the incarnation of ignorance, one of the material modes of nature.
