bandhūnām icchatāḿ dātuḿ

kṛṣṇāya bhaginīḿ nṛpa

tato nivārya kṛṣṇa-dviḍ

rukmī caidyam amanyata

SYNONYMS

bandhūnām — her family members; icchatām — even as they were desiring; dātumto give; kṛṣṇāyato Kṛṣṇa; bhaginīm — their sister; nṛpaO King; tataḥ — from this; nivārya — preventing them; kṛṣṇa-dviṭ — hateful of Kṛṣṇa; rukmīRukmī; caidyamCaidya (Śiśupāla); amanyata — considered.

TRANSLATION

Because Rukmī envied the Lord, O King, he forbade his family members to give his sister to Kṛṣṇa, although they wanted to. Instead, Rukmī decided to give Rukmiṇī to Śiśupāla.

PURPORT

Rukmī abused his position as elder brother and acted with impure motives. He would only suffer for his decision.
