aho vidhātas tava na kvacid dayā

saḿyojya maitryā praṇayena dehinaḥ

tāḿś cākṛtārthān viyunańkṣy apārthakaḿ

viceṣṭitaḿ te 'rbhaka-ceṣṭitaḿ yathā

SYNONYMS

aho — alas; vidhātaḥ — O Providence; tava — your; na — not; kvacit — at any time; dayā — mercy; saḿyojya — making connections; maitryā — by friendship; praṇayena — and by affection; dehinaḥ — of the embodied souls; tān — them; ca — and; akṛta-arthān — without achievement; viyunańkṣi — you cause to happen; apārthakam — separation; viceṣṭitam — activities; te — your; arbhaka — of a boy; ceṣṭitam — the childish play; yathā — like.

TRANSLATION

"'O Providence, you have no mercy! You bring embodied souls together through friendship and affection, but before their desires are fulfilled, you separate them. Your activities are like the foolish pranks of children.'

PURPORT

This verse, quoted from Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (10.39.19), was chanted by the damsels of Vraja when Kṛṣṇa left Vṛndāvana for Mathurā with Akrūra and Balarāma. The gopīs lamented that Providence had made it possible for them to meet Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma in affection and love and had then separated them.
